Chief Complain, Brain Tumor by John Kerastas Book Feature

Chief-Complaint-Brain-Tumor-201x300ABOUT CHIEF COMPLAINT, BRAIN TUMOR

At 57 years old, John Kerastas thought he was the poster child for fifty-year old healthiness: he competed in triathlons, rode in 100 mile biking events and ate a healthy diet chock full of organic vegetables. Then he discovered that he had a brain tumor the size of his wife’s fist. His memoir chronicles the first year he spent addressing tumor-related health issues: preparing for his first operation, discovering a dangerous skull infection, having the infected portion of his skull surgically removed, learning about his substantial vision and cognitive losses, undergoing rehab and radiation treatments, and learning to live with his “new normal.” According to Kerastas, the phrase “new normal” is the medical community’s code words for “You’re alive, so quit complaining.” As his health changed, so did his sense of humor. He writes that his humor started out superficially light-hearted prior to the first operation; transmogrified into gallows humor after several subsequent operations; and leveled out as somewhat wry-ish after radiation and rehab. This is a surprisingly upbeat and inspiring book for anybody interested in memoirs about people dealing with personal crises, for patients trudging through rehab, for caretakers helping victims of serious illnesses, or for anybody looking for an unexpected chuckle from an unlikely subject. JOHN KERASTAS has worked at a global advertising agency, at several technology start-up companies and as a free-lance writer. Now, in addition to non-profit and charitable work, he spends his time blogging, speaking and writing about brain health, brain tumors and rehab.

Dash (Book 2) Dash Cover 2

“His parents are gone. He lives in the woods…”

Dash is a dark lion with a dark secret. Living as an orphan in the cold, winter forest, he strives to hide that secret from the other young animals that have come to resent him. But when he meets the animal that has haunted his past, he isn’t sure what to do.

Meanwhile, Saderia finally gets her wish to go to school. She hopes to meet a friend, but she gets slightly more than she bargained for when she meets a fun-loving cheetah, a bullying panther, three prissy girls, prejudiced teachers, and a strange assistant principal who seems to enjoy making Saderia’s life more difficult. But there is no one as strange as the dark lion that sits in the back, and hides his face from her.

Saderia starts having Dreams again, but even though she knows what they are, she still doesn’t understand them. At the same time, she struggles to accept the prophecy she learned about in her ancestor’s tomb. But why do her Dreams and her instinct always direct her toward the dark lion who seems to fear her?

As the two animals get to know each other, Saderia wonders if Dash is hiding something, while Dash realizes that it is much harder to keep secrets from friends.

Book 3: Hunted Home

Book 4: Enchanted Home

Book 5: Rock Bottom

You will love the characters created by this wonderful young author, and the story will keep you turning the pages because this story will pull you in and just won’t let you go!

This Little Book of Mine

This story was written for kids – in their own language and with a directness other kids will enjoy reading.

Classic Children’s Books

When did you first get bit by the writing bug?

Probably before I was even born! I have loved telling stories for as long as I can remember. When I was really young, I used to just love scribbling out stories on a piece of paper. As I got older, I started writing more complex stories – but even then, they were just short stories about my cats! When I was 12, though, I started getting serious about writing and decided I wanted to be an author. That was when I wrote the final draft of my first book, The Tiger Princess, a 300+ page fantasy novel about a curious tiger Princess named Saderia, which I later went on to publish at the age of 13.

Interview at The Children’s and Teen’s Book Connection

Does your book have an underlying message that readers should know about?

When I wrote the book and the other books in the series, I didn’t write it specifically to outline a message. I wrote it mainly as a story that would entertain me and other children. However, there are many messages woven into the story that readers can take away from it. In fact, a young fan actually contacted me once to tell me that my books helped her learn to forgive and say sorry after a fight. I was totally ecstatic that my books could help someone! But in addition to that message,The Tiger Princess and the other books in the Saderia Series also include a few other messages such as these:

1. To always be yourself,

2. To never stop believing in yourself,

3. To follow your dreams (sometimes quite literally in Saderia’s case!),

4. The closeness and power of family and friendships,

5. To never give up even in the face of danger.

Interview at Pump Up Your Book

I found myself liking this book better then the first. I found my stride. Still a fan of Saderia. She is growing up. Most of the new friends that Saderia met at school I liked. Of course the mean girls and Saderia’s teacher I did not care for. It just goes to show you that even a princess has to deal with bullies at school. Dash was a nice addition to this series. Hope to see more of him.

Cheryl’s Book Nook

DASH is a really cute book for the younger generation to read! Well, even I enjoyed it, so its  really an enjoyable book for anyone to read!

She wrote the novel when she was 12. She is fascinated with wild animals and the wild world outside her home, and has an obvious great love of tigers. She enjoys spending time with her cats, reading, drawing, and playing her violin when she is not writing. Q: Do you tend to base your characters on real people or are they totally from your imagination?

A: It’s interesting how many people I went to school with say to me that they have figured out that, “Nicole is so and so, or Jason is based on so and so.” Popular theories are that DeDe is based on an ex-girlfriend from high school and that Jason is based on me.

As the Pages Turn Interview

Mr. Sergi, keep up the good work. I was thoroughly entertained and had no problems giving this book to my nine year-old daughter who also loved the book.

Daddynificent, Mommynificent.com

At the end of the day, Sky Girl and the Superheroic Adventures, and the character of Sky Girl is the culmination of reading far too many great comics, finding far too few strong female characters and loving my daughter just enough.  I would like to thank you for letting to talk about the secret origin of Sky Girl.

The Story Behind the Book

Sky Girl and the Superheroic Adventures is a fun, supersonic, high-flying, good time!

Cheryl’s Book Nook

Overall I really enjoyed the characters in this story and with the twist the author provided at the end he has certainly left me wanting to read the next book in the series!

WV Stitcher

If you have a young girl in the house, like 12 to 16, I think this book will go over eally super. It is light on violence and bad words. It also has some really good quality values that seep through and hopefully stick with your child and help guide them in real life.

Mary’s Cup of Tea

It’s definitely different reading superhero fiction in novel form versus in comics or graphic novels, but I feel it’s a good different and hope this genre catches oJoe Sergi photon.

Soul on Nice by Norm Spitzig Book Feature – Win a Chance for 2 $100 Amazon Gift Cards!

Soul-Nice-194x300

ABOUT SOUL ON NICE

Soul on Nice chronicles the latest and greatest adventures of the Old Bunbury Golf Links & Reading Club’s waitress extraordinaire Esther, the highly eccentric but undeniably lovable protagonist of his previous epic works. This time Norm’s scintillating tale is truly global in scope, with Esther opening the novel zooming her merry old way to beautiful New Zealand. This titanic clash between good and evil is part playful and evocative travelogue, part staunch conservative manifesto, part clever and poignant mystery, part whimsical exposé of the madcap world of private clubs, and all treasure trove of quirky good cheer. While anyone with a decent sense of humor will surely love Norm’s latest story, readers who also understand and appreciate the fascinating world of private golf clubs will be doubly pleased.

ABOUT NORM SPITZIG

Norm Spitzig is internationally recognized as a successful entrepreneur; a leading business consultant; an eloquent, visionary, humorous, and engaging speaker on a variety of important business and lifestyle topics; and an all-around good egg. His groundbreaking book Perspectives on Club Management—now more than thirty years old—continues to inspire and challenge private club owners, directors, managers, and students around the world. Norm, qua Clive Endive Ogive IV, is also the more recent author of three very funny and insightful books, Private Clubs in America and around the World and Murder and Mayhem at Old Bunbury, both of which are available at http://www.CliveEndiveOgiveIV.com, Amazon, many private club golf pro shops, and fine bookstores everywhere. The third, How Now, Norm’s Tao, is Norm’s autobiography, a book that has been recently hailed as a “powerful and poignant memoir by one of the most accomplished and unique writers to grace contemporary American literature.” How Now, Norm’s Tao, together with Soul on Nice, is available at http://www.NormSpitzig.com and from Amazon and assorted bookstores.

Norm’s leadership and professional contributions to the worldwide private club industry have been varied and significant. Elected a national director of the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) in 1989, he served as its national president in 1995—the same year he became one of the original six general managers to earn the prestigious lifetime Master Club Manager (MCM) designation.

Norm currently serves as a principal & senior partner in Master Club Advisors (www.MasterClubAdvisors.com), publisher of the premier newsletter for leaders in the worldwide private club industry, Club Management Perspectives, and now regarded by more and more leaders in the global private club industry as the “general manager executive search firm of choice.” Norm’s Board of Directors’ leadership orientations, strategic planning sessions, and inspirational talks have been very well received at national, regional, and local meetings of many professional associations, company retreats, and great individual private clubs on six continents. He has the singular honor of having been twice named the club industry’s educator of the year.

Norm, who doggedly continues his improbable, and admittedly weird, pursuit of logging one hundred thousand running miles before he ascends to the great private club in the sky, resides in the historic town of Mount Dora, Florida, with his beautiful bride, Cody, and ball-obsessed chocolate Labrador, Lucy.

Taken word for word as heard from God, Closet Words is a collection of powerful and penetrating words written down in the stillness of a prayer closet. Hearing from God for several years, Kim Hilton began writing down what she heard. Encouraging, uplifting, and challenging words with a clear message to His servants, Closet Words gives a renewal and refreshing word to the Christian believer.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Although it had happened once before, it was on a particular August morning in 2002 as Kim Hilton prayed a single prayer to God that He began speaking to her. Taken word for word as heard from God, Closet Words (WestBow Press) is a collection of the powerful and penetrating words that were written down in the stillness of a prayer closet. What began as Kim’s earnest journey to seek God in prayer became a passageway for God to answer and speak to her.

Kim was an orphan, the youngest of six children. Her mother was 13 when she had her first child and 19 when Kim was born. Six children in six years. Kim saw her mother shot with a shotgun by her father. She lived in violence, abuse and poverty. She personally experienced extreme hunger because there was no food. Eventually the State came in and took all six of the children from the home. They were put into an orphanage, then foster care and then eventually four were adopted.

She has lived a journey of healing for many years – she chose long ago to not only be a survivor but to be an overcomer. Kim began a journey of seeking God and as she did she began hearing from God. She kept a journal and wrote down what she heard.

It was during the time Kim had been searching for a deeper relationship with God and praying in the quiet of her closet that she started hearing from Him and she kept a journal of what she heard. His words would come at any time; sometimes as she was praying in the closet, sometimes at night in bed and she would reach for her pen and paper to scribble the words down. He even spoke to others through her and what she passed on to them greatly impacted their lives.

Kim reveals to us the words she heard in the same honest, straight-forward way she received them from the Lord. Closet Words is both encouraging and uplifting, and brings a clear message to the Christian believer – that we are not alone in this life and that God is deeply and personally committed to each and every one of us. From Kim’s powerful and inspiring words we are reassured that we never have to face the journey of life alone.

When the elevator doors open and Jack Hudson appears with his perfect smile and perfect teeth, Charlie thinks she’s found her answer. Raquel Whiting GilmerABOUT RAQUEL WHITING GILMER

Hi, my name is Raquel Whiting Gilmer and I am a wife, daughter, aspiring mother (I don’t have any kids yet but I want them.), sister, friend, small group leader, lawyer, entrepreneur, confidant, advisor, blogger, twitter attempter, soon to be published author, and accepter of crumbs. Well, a recovering crumbs accepter. What’s a crumb accepter? Is it as bad as it sounds? It’s bad, but it’s preventable and curable.

Freedictionary.com defines a crumb as a small fragment, scrap, or portion. And it defines accepter as one who accepts. So a crumbs accepter is one who accepts small scraps. No bueno, right? How did I get like this? Well, I think my low self-esteem was the root cause of it. And I’ve learned that when your self-esteem is bad then you will accept anything including crumbs in all areas of your life. BTW, my biggest crumbs area was definitely my relationships with men.

Things are different now and I have committed myself to Live Crumbs Free. Live crumbs free? Yes, I am committed to not accepting crumbs in any area of my life. But to get to this point, I had to do some work. I first had to work on my self-esteem. And after lots of therapy I got to a place where not only did I have high self-esteem but I started a website, http://www.perfectlyme.com, and a girls’ program, Perfectly Me Girls to encourage other women and girls to embrace and love who they are and not judge themselves by the world’s standards. Our motto is I’m not perfect, I’m just Perfectly Me.

Once my self-esteem was on the rise, I could start to look at the crumbs in my life. And I knew I had to deal with my personal crumbs and I’m happy to report that after many failed relationships and mounds of crumbs, I met the love of my life and married him. Yay!!! I have the full meal and then some now and it has changed my life. I want everyone to have that full meal and I know how bad the crumbs are so I’ve written my first novel about a woman struggling with relationships who finally figures out that Crumbs Aren’t Enough. I hope you will read my blog at http://www.raquelwhiting.com, check out my novel, and follow me on twitter, @perfectlyraquel, as I dole out advice and wisdom (my limited wisdom) on keeping your self-esteem high and getting rid of the crumbs.
